Homo Deus or Imago Dei? When do we creatures become gods?

October 16, 2017 @ 7:15 pm - 9:00 pm
Lafayette Orinda Presbyterian Church, 49 Knox Drive
Lafayette, CA 94549 United States
+ Google Map

Can the human race use technology to elevate us from creatures into gods? "Having raised humanity above the beastly level of survival struggles, we will now aim to upgrade humans into gods, and turn Homo sapiens into Homo deus." 1 Yuval Noah Harari, among others, thinks deification is just around the technological corner. The Future of Transhumanism as a New Religious Movement

Luther and Copernicus: From Reformation to Revolution

November 23, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
University of Eastern Finland Finland + Google Map

2017 marks the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's 95 Theses. We recall the hammer and nails of 1517 that sparked the Protestant Reformation. In 1543 Nicolaus Copernicus published his theory that the Earth orbits the Sun; and this sparked the Copernican Revolution. Are these two revolutions connected? This is a historical mystery. Lutherans today love natural science. Could Copernicus be the reason? University of Helsinki Finland + Google Map

2017 marks the 500th Anniversary of the posting of Martin Luther's 95 Theses. 2017 also marks the inauguration of the Tuomo Mannermaa Lecture series. It's time to assess the value and relevancy of the doctrine by which the church rises or falls: justification by faith. What does it mean, really? How can faith in a trustworthy God make our life and our world better? The good news is that we innately love justice. The bad news is this: when we…
