2017 marks the 500th Anniversary of the posting of Martin Luther’s 95 Theses. 2017 also marks the inauguration of the Tuomo Mannermaa Lecture series. It’s time to assess the value and relevancy of the doctrine by which the church rises or falls: justification by faith. What does it mean, really? How can faith in a
trustworthy God make our life and our world better? The good news is that we innately love justice. The bad news is this: when we fall short of justice we fake it. We engage in self-justification. Self-justifying
behavior, more than anything else we do, diverts God’s grace in our daily lives. The gospel understood as justification-by- faith announces that God justifies us, so we don’t have to. This changes everything. It means we can live in confidence. We can sin boldly.
